Abnormal Bleeding Q & A

What is abnormal bleeding?

Abnormal bleeding includes any bleeding that differs from your normal menstrual cycle. A woman’s typical menstrual cycle runs anywhere from 24 to 38 days, with a period that lasts up to eight days.

You may be experiencing abnormal bleeding if you have:

  • Bleeding in-between your period
  • Bleeding longer than eight days
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding that disrupts your daily routine
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Menstrual cycle shorter than 24 days or longer than 38 days
  • Bleeding after sex
  • Irregular period

Abnormal bleeding is common and expected in some situations. Girls may have an irregular period when they first start menstruating. You may also have abnormal bleeding before you reach menopause.

However, no matter your age, symptoms, or suspected cause, you shouldn’t ignore abnormal bleeding. At Comprehensive OBGYN PA, Dr. Savci can provide the care you need.

What causes abnormal bleeding?

Abnormal bleeding may develop from any number of causes and is a symptom of many gynecological conditions.

Common causes of abnormal bleeding include:

Your abnormal bleeding may also be a symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which causes hormonal changes that affect your menstrual cycle.

What happens during an abnormal bleeding consultation?

When you visit Comprehensive OBGYN PA with concerns about abnormal bleeding, you can expect a comprehensive, patient-centered evaluation. Dr. Savci works hard to make you feel comfortable and safe and really listens to your concerns and needs.

Dr. Savci asks detailed questions about your symptoms, including your usual menstrual cycle, gynecological history, medical history, and family history. She also performs a physical and pelvic exam.

To confirm or rule out a suspected cause to explain your abnormal bleeding, Dr. Savci may run lab work or perform an in-office ultrasound or hysteroscopy.

How is abnormal bleeding treated?

Treatment for your abnormal bleeding may depend on the underlying cause. Dr. Savci works closely with you to develop a plan that caters to your needs.

Your treatment plan may include:

  • Hormonal birth control
  • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist
  • Tranexamic acid
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Antibiotics
  • Disease-specific medication

For women with heavy menstrual bleeding without future pregnancy plans, Dr. Savci may recommend endometrial ablation with NovaSure®. During the hospital-based procedure, she uses the NovaSure device to heat and destroy your endometrial tissue to reduce bleeding.
