Minimally Invasive Surgery Q & A

What is minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery utilizes innovative tools and techniques when performing procedures, minimizing trauma to your body. At Comprehensive OBGYN PA, Dr. Savci performs minimally invasive surgery for her patients that require hospital-based surgery.

Some of the gynecological conditions she may diagnose and treat with minimally invasive surgery include:

Dr. Savci also uses minimally invasive techniques to perform a hysterectomy, which is the surgical removal of the uterus.

Though Dr. Savci sometimes recommends surgery for the treatment of urinary incontinence, she prefers a non-surgical approach. She may suggest bladder training, pelvic floor exercises, or various devices, to reduce the risk of urine leakage.

What are the types of minimally invasive surgery?

At Comprehensive OBGYN PA, Dr. Savci uses two minimally invasive surgical techniques: laparoscopic and hysteroscopic.

Laparoscopic surgery

With laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Savci uses a special surgical camera — a laparoscope — to assist in the procedure. During surgery, she makes a small incision in your abdomen and inserts the laparoscope, which transmits images of your reproductive organs onto a computer monitor.

With the laparoscope, she evaluates your organs, diagnoses problems, and performs procedures. For surgery, she makes small incisions in your abdomen to insert the surgical instruments she needs to perform the procedure.

Hysteroscopic approach

During the hysteroscopic approach, Dr. Savci inserts a hysteroscope in your vagina and advances it to your cervix and uterus. The hysteroscope is a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera that allows her to evaluate the tissue and diagnose a problem.

Once she finds the problem, she inserts surgical instruments through the hysteroscope to perform the procedure.

She may use the hysteroscopic approach to treat fibroids, polyps, or abnormal bleeding.

Dr. Savci also performs endometrial ablation at the hospital to treat abnormal bleeding.

What are the benefits of minimally invasive surgery?

When it comes to patient care, Dr. Savci puts your health and needs first. She performs minimally invasive surgery because of the many benefits it offers when compared to traditional open surgery, including:

  • Less tissue damage and scarring
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Minimal post-surgical pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Lower risk of post-surgery complications

Most importantly, minimally invasive surgery requires less downtime so you can get back to doing the things you love faster.
